Everyone has their own face and body beauty kit, but not everybody has a set that takes care of all the body’s needs.

Take a look at the products you own and assess. Chances are, you’ve got a good facial scrub, but have you got a good body scrub to match?

A body scrub is a great addition to your beauty arsenal, and here’s why:

  • It removes dead skin cells from the surface of the skin
  • It aids with blood circulation and encourages skin cell turnover
  • It helps soften rough, dry patches of skin and returns it to a softer, smoother state.

Why body scrubs are really great for you

The skin on our bodies works constantly to replace old, dead skin cells with new ones. Dead skin cells move to the top of the skin’s surface, coming off naturally, and revealing newer, rejuvenated skin underneath.

This process begins to slows down as we age, and our skin begins to need help shedding off this old skin. Body scrubs help with this process in a gentle, natural way.

Body scrub exfoliation is not just good for the appearance and texture of our skin. As you apply and massage body scrub to different parts of the body, you are increasing blood flow to the surface of the skin.

You are also helping the body get rid of toxins and lower the amount of oxidative stress in the body. As we all know, oxidative stress – or the presence of harmful free radicals – is a major source of premature aging.

Best of all, skin exfoliation preps the skin for the optimal absorption of moisturizer of the body. Once you’ve gotten rid of all the dead skin, your skin is fully cleansed and ready to take in the amount of moisturizing it really needs.

How often to use a body scrub

Body scrubs are really easy to use. It’s a matter of assessing what’s good for you based on your skin type.

If your skin is in normal, healthy condition, using a body scrub is perfectly two to three times a week. If you’ve got sensitive skin that’s prone to redness or irritation, once a week is probably sufficient.

In the shower, do your usual soap and shampoo routine, then apply body scrub to the body starting from the lower part of the body moving upwards, rubbing in circular motion. Spend a little more time on rough, thickened patches of skin, then rinse off, dry yourself with a towel, and apply your favorite moisturizer.

Exercise caution with body scrubs if you’ve got sunburned, wounded, or badly irritated skin from a chronic skin condition.

How to pick out a body scrub with really great ingredients

Here’s the fun part: finding a body scrub with really great ingredients. A little research goes a long way.

Sugar-based scrubs are great for help people with dry skin conditions. Brown sugar and honey are a great combination for moisturizing skin.

Salt-based scrubs are great at helping the body detoxify and working well on drier, rougher areas of skin, such as knees, elbows, and feet. Mixed with natural oils as coconut or olive oil, or herbs like rosemary and lavender, can boost their effectiveness

Other common ingredients in body scrubs include fruit acids. Citrus and papaya body scrub products, in particular, are a popular choice, because they help boost collagen growth, provide extra antioxidant protection, and help gently lighten skin.
